Exposed aggregate is the finish that hides everything a plain gray slab shows: tire marks, hairline crazing, leaf stain and salt haze.

We place the slab, apply a surface retarder, and wash the top paste away at the right moment to reveal the stone. Timing is the whole job — too early and you lose stone, too late and the finish is inconsistent.

Why lakefront and luxury homes choose it

Around Orchard Lake and West Bloomfield, exposed aggregate is the default for pool surrounds and lake-access walks because it keeps traction when wet and blends with natural stone hardscape.

It also ages well. As the surface wears, more stone shows rather than a worn gray paste.

Pool decks and glow-stone borders

Pool surrounds take more abuse than any other slab on a property: chlorine, constant splash-out, bare feet and winter heave. A washed stone finish handles all four, and a dark charcoal aggregate hides splash staining that plain gray concrete shows immediately.

For evening use we can seed luminescent aggregate into the surface. The stones charge in daylight and outline coping lines, step edges and border bands after dark, so the deck reads clearly at night without floodlights.

  • Charcoal or natural washed stone with stamped or broom border bands
  • Optional glow-stone seeding along coping, steps and walkway edges
  • Slip-resistant surface with drainage pitch away from the pool shell

Exposed aggregate patios, walkways and borders

An exposed aggregate patio gives a backyard a natural stone look with better traction than a smooth slab. We tie patios, front walkways and steps together so the finish matches from the driveway to the back door.

Prefer a plain broom-finish field? An exposed aggregate border frames a driveway or patio with a darker, decorative edge.

Common questions

Does exposed aggregate hold up to Michigan freeze-thaw cycles?

Yes, when it is built correctly. We use 4,500 PSI concrete, 4.5-inch thickness, wire-mesh reinforcement and a compacted base, so the slab resists the winter heave and salt exposure that damage weaker pours. The washed stone surface also gives natural traction on icy mornings.

Is exposed aggregate harder to shovel?

It is slightly rougher than a broom finish, but a sealed exposed aggregate slab clears fine with a plastic-edged shovel or a plow with rubber cutting edge.

Can you match existing exposed aggregate?

We match aggregate size and color as closely as the supply allows, but an old weathered slab and a new pour will never be identical. On visible areas we recommend replacing to a joint line.
