How a Marcucci driveway replacement works from tear-out to cure, what goes into the slab, and how to compare bids before you hire.
If your concrete driveway is badly cracked, settling, heaving or holding water, another patch may not solve the underlying problem. At some point, removing the old slab and starting over can make more sense than continuing to repair it.
But a concrete driveway replacement involves more than tearing out old concrete and pouring a new slab.
The base underneath the driveway, drainage, concrete strength, slab thickness, reinforcement and installation all affect how the finished driveway performs—especially through Michigan's freeze-thaw cycles.
Marcucci Concrete Construction, based on Pontiac Trail in Wixom, replaces residential concrete driveways throughout Oakland and Livingston counties. Here's what homeowners should expect from the process and what to compare when getting driveway replacement estimates.
When Should You Replace a Concrete Driveway?
Not every crack means you need a new driveway.
Small or isolated cracks may be repairable. Replacement becomes more worth considering when problems affect larger portions of the driveway or point to issues beneath the concrete.
Signs it may be time for concrete driveway replacement include:
- Multiple large or widening cracks
- Sections that have settled or become uneven
- Heaving between slabs
- Water pooling or poor drainage
- Significant surface deterioration
- Repeated repairs that aren't solving the problem
- An older driveway with widespread damage
The condition of the base matters, too. If movement underneath the driveway contributed to the damage, simply repairing the surface doesn't address what's happening below it.
That's one reason Marcucci evaluates the driveway on site before providing a written estimate.
Step 1: On-Site Concrete Driveway Estimate
Every property is different.
Marcucci measures the driveway on site and evaluates the existing concrete, access, grading and scope of work before preparing an estimate.
The written scope covers the major parts of the project, including:
- Removal of the existing driveway
- Base preparation
- Concrete specifications
- Finish
- Cleanup
Our estimates also list our Michigan license #242100312 and 1-year written warranty.
When comparing concrete driveway contractors, make sure you're comparing the actual scope of work—not just the price at the bottom of the estimate.
Step 2: Old Driveway Removal and Base Preparation
Concrete you can see is only part of a driveway.
What's underneath it matters.
During a full driveway replacement, the existing slab is broken up, removed and hauled away. The base can then be evaluated and rebuilt rather than simply pouring new concrete over an existing problem.
Marcucci uses compacted 21AA crushed concrete for the driveway base.
Proper base preparation helps create a stable foundation for the new driveway and helps manage water beneath the slab. That's particularly important in Michigan, where moisture combined with repeated freezing and thawing can contribute to movement.
If you're comparing driveway replacement companies, ask specifically what is included in base preparation. “Remove and replace driveway” doesn't tell you enough.
Step 3: Grading, Forms and Drainage
Before the concrete is poured, forms establish the shape, elevation and slope of the new driveway.
Drainage deserves particular attention.
A new concrete driveway should be designed so water moves where it's supposed to go—not toward the house or garage and not into areas where it can sit against the slab.
Existing site conditions can affect what's possible, which is another reason an on-site evaluation matters.
Step 4: Reinforcement and Concrete Pour
Marcucci installs wire mesh in every standard driveway slab.
Our standard driveway specification is:
4,500 PSI air-entrained concrete poured at a 4.5-inch thickness.
Why does that matter?
When you're comparing bids from concrete driveway contractors, “new concrete driveway” isn't a complete specification.
Ask each contractor:
- What PSI concrete will be used?
- How thick will the driveway be?
- What reinforcement is included?
- Is the concrete air entrained?
- What base material will be used?
- How will the base be compacted?
If those details aren't written into the proposal, ask before you sign.
Step 5: Finishing and Control Joints
Once the concrete is poured, the surface is finished and control joints are saw-cut in 6' x 6' sections to 25% of the slab thickness.
Concrete naturally expands, contracts and moves. Control joints are intentionally placed to help manage that movement.
No reputable concrete contractor can promise that exterior concrete will never crack—particularly in Michigan. Proper preparation, concrete specifications and joint placement are about giving the driveway the best opportunity to perform well over time.
How Long Does Concrete Driveway Replacement Take?
Most Marcucci driveway replacement projects take approximately two days of work, weather permitting.
The driveway isn't ready for vehicles immediately after the crew leaves, however.
Concrete needs time to cure.
We'll explain when you can safely walk and drive on your new driveway based on the project and conditions. Don't assume that because concrete looks hard on the surface it's ready for normal vehicle traffic.
What Does Concrete Driveway Replacement Cost?
The cost to replace a concrete driveway depends on more than square footage.
Two similarly sized driveways can have different replacement costs because of demolition, site access, base conditions, grading, drainage and other project requirements.
Factors that can affect concrete driveway replacement cost include:
- Driveway size
- Amount and condition of existing concrete
- Tear-out and disposal requirements
- Base preparation
- Access for equipment
- Grading and drainage
- Concrete specifications
- Driveway layout
- Site conditions
- Additional concrete work included with the project
That's why Marcucci provides an on-site written estimate instead of giving homeowners a generic per-square-foot number that may not reflect the actual project.

How to Compare Concrete Driveway Contractors
Searching for a concrete driveway contractor near you can produce a long list of companies. The lowest bid isn't necessarily the best value—and the highest bid doesn't automatically mean better work.
The important question is: What are you actually getting?
Put the estimates next to each other and compare:
- Concrete strength: What PSI is specified?
- Slab thickness: How many inches of concrete are included?
- Reinforcement: Is wire mesh or another reinforcement included?
- Base: What material is being used, and how will it be prepared?
- Tear-out: Is removal and disposal of the existing driveway included?
- Drainage: How will water be directed away from the house and garage?
- Cleanup: What happens to debris and the work area when the project is finished?
- License: Is the contractor properly licensed for the work?
- Warranty: Is there a written workmanship warranty?
If one driveway replacement estimate is significantly cheaper than another, look at these details before assuming you've found a better deal.
You may simply be comparing two different scopes of work.
